Description
President Ford nominated John Paul Stevens to the Supreme Court in 1975. He identified as a conservative but his opinions on issues of civil liberties, the death penalty, and intellectual property were considered as liberal. He initially opposed affirmative action but changed his view. In 2018, Stevens said that Brett Kavanaugh’s statements at his confirmation hearing should have disqualified him for his potential for political bias. Powell said the decision in the case of Citizens United was “a disaster for our election law.” He retired after thirty-four years on the bench making him the second-oldest justice in the history of the Supreme Court.
