Description
Ruth Bader Ginsburg was appointed to the Court by Bill Clinton and confirmed by a 96-3 vote of the Senate. She was a non-observant Jew, attributing that to gender inequality in Jewish prayer ritual. She was the first Jewish woman and the 2nd woman to serve on the court. In 1960, she had been rejected for a Supreme Court clerkship due to her gender. In 1972, she became the ACLU general counsel. Ruth Bader Ginsburg filed the first federal case to challenge involuntary sterilization. She spent much of her legal career as an advocate for gender equality and women’s rights before and after her appointment to the Supreme Court. Ginsburg became a “pop culture icon” after the retirement of O’Connor, left her as the only serving female justice from 2006-2009.
The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest federal court of the United States, established in 1788 pursuant to Article Three of the U.S. Constitution. It has the ultimate jurisdiction over all federal and state court cases involving federal laws. The Court normally consists of the Chief Justice and eight associate justices, who are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. Justices have lifetime tenure unless they resign, retire or are removed after impeachment. The Supreme Court is one of the three branches of the federal government which also includes the Executive (President) and Legislative (Senate and House of Representatives).
