Description

Richard Rush was the son of physician and Founding Father, Benjamin Rush.  Known for his oratorical skills, Richard was appointed Attorney General for the state of Pennsylvania in 1811.  He became one of President Madison’s closest advisers during the War of 1812 and in 1814 Madison elevated Rush to be the U.S. Attorney General.  When James Monroe became president, Rush remained in that position and served as acting Secretary of State.  In 1825 he was appointed as Secretary of the Treasury.  John Quincy Adams chose Rush as his running mate in the presidential election of 1828, but Adams lost his run for re-election being defeated by Andrew Jackson.  Rush then served as a diplomat for various groups and helped establish the Smithsonian Institution.

The position of attorney general was created as part of the president’s cabinet beginning with the administration of George Washington. Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisers, in the form of the attorney general, secretary of the treasury, secretary of state, and secretary of war.  Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers.  Members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.  The attorney general is the head of the Department of Justice and its top law enforcement officer.

This Richard Rush History Mug is part of our U.S. Attorney General series which includes the many unique individuals who served as U.S. Attorney General.
