Description
Stacey Abrams was the first black woman to become the gubernatorial nominee for a major party in the United States, and the first African-American woman and first Georgian to deliver a response to the State of the Union. In 2018, she founded Fair Fight Action an organization that addressed alleged voter suppression in Georgia, and across the United States. Fair Fight Action later merged with the Voter Empowerment Task Force, a composition of other civil rights groups which include the Georgia Coalition for People’s Agenda, Black Voters Matter Fund, and the Georgia NAACP.
In 1995, while attending Spelman College, Stacey Abrams took part in a protest on the steps of the Georgia Capitol where she joined in burning the Georgia state flag. At that time the Georgia flag included an image of the Confederate battle flag, which was added to the state flag in 1956 as an anti-civil rights movement action. Abrams was elected as a Democrat to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2006. She served as the minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives from 2011-2017. She is an author of both fiction and nonfiction. Her nonfiction book Our Time is Now, and Lead from the Outside were New York Times best sellers. Before 2021, she had written eight fiction books under the pen name Selena Montgomery.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
