Louisa May Alcott’s father was a transcendentalist who opened experimental schools and a commune. The family struggled financially, which led Alcott and her sisters to take on jobs. She worked as a teacher, governess, seamstress, and writer. The family hid a fugitive slave for a week in 1847, as ‟station masters” on the Underground Railroad. At the beginning of the Civil War Louisa May Alcott worked as a nurse in the Union Hospital. Her life experiences were the basis of much of her writing. Family friends Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne were important influences in her life and writing.
Growing up in the company of intellectuals, Louisa May Alcott wrote her first book at age 16. She was influenced by abolitionists and feminists and was the first woman to register to vote in Concord, MA. Early on she wrote several stories and novels under the pseudonym, A.M. Barnard. The book Civil War Hospital Sketches in 1863 brought attention to her writing and was followed by Little Women in 1868, both of which drew heavily from her own experiences. The publication of Little Women gave her financial stability that she shared with her family. Louisa May Alcott followed this success with Good Wives, Little Men and Jo᾽s Boys, which continued the March family stories. She joined the ranks of other female authors who dealt with woman᾽s issues and spoke about the daily life of women in their works.
