Born in the Wellfleet, Lorenzo Dow Baker became a ship’s captain and an international fruit trader, who created the modern banana production industry. His fruit trading business began, while docked in Jamaica for repairs to his ship, damaged in a storm. He purchased green bananas and coconuts, to fill the empty hull, which he took to New York and sold at a profit. Lorenzo Dow Baker formed the United Fruit Company which is now known as Chiquita Brands International. Recognized as the father of tourism in Wellfleet, he built the 62 room Chequessett Inn, on Mercantile Wharf.
The Beach House, also known as the Elephant House, was built by Lorenzo Baker’s son as a summer home. The unique design was based on a house he had seen during his travels. The house sits on Chequessett Bluff across from where the Chequessett Inn, a 62 room hotel was built on a wharf in 1902. The inn was ruined by chunks of ice crushing the pier’s pilings in 1934. The Great Depression crippled Wellfleet’s economy and the grand hotel was never rebuilt.
