Description
John Breckinridge was a cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 he was serving in the U.S. Senate. Breckinridge was expelled from the Senate when he joined the Confederate Army where he attained the rank of major general. John Breckinridge served under Braxton Bragg and worked with Jubal Early’s campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley. Breckinridge became the first commander of the First Kentucky Brigade also known as the ‟Orphan Brigade.” In 1865 Jefferson Davis appointed Breckinridge as the C.S.A. secretary of war. When the war ended he fled to Cuba, Great Britain and Canada, returning to the U.S. in 1868, when President Andrew Johnson extended amnesty to all former Confederates.
This John Breckinridge mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
