In 1857 George Crook, while serving in California in the infantry, was severely wounded by an Indian arrow.  During the Civil War, he was wounded again in Lewisburg, VA, in the Second Battle of Bull Run.  Later he led his brigade at the Battle of South Mountain and at Antietam.  There he developed a lifelong friendship with his subordinate, Colonel Rutherford B. Hayes.  He fought at the Battle of Chickamauga and was part of the Chattanooga Campaign.  Crook fought in many campaigns in Virginia and was at Appomattox Court House as the war came to an end.  After the Civil War, he fought in the Indian Wars against the Sioux, Snake, Paiute and Apache.  He was nicknamed Nantan Lupan by the Apache, which means “Gray Wolf.”

This George Crook mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
