Description

Jennie Irene Hodgers was born in Ireland but lived her life and served in the Union Army under the name Albert D. J. Cashier.  Albert fought in 40 battles, which included the Siege at Vicksburg and the Red River Campaign.  In 1862 she enlisted as part of the 95th Illinois Infantry.  That regiment was assigned to the Army of the Tennessee in which Grant was commanding general.  After the war she maintained her identity as a man and labored as a janitor, cemetery worker and street lamplighter.  In 1910 Cashier was hit by a car and the attending doctor discovered he was a woman, but kept the discovery secret.  She continued to live as a man until her mind deteriorated and was committed to a hospital for the insane.

This Jennie Irene Hodgers mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
