Description
Jim Shoulders was one of the most famous rodeo stars of all time. He won his first rodeo at age 14 and in the 1950s went on to win a record 16 world titles. He was the first cowboy to receive commercial endorsements from such companies as Wrangler Jeans, Miller Beer, and James Boots. He is a lifetime member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. Jim retired from the rodeo circuit at age 42. He used his winnings to purchase a ranch in Oklahoma, where he ran a rodeo school and raised bulls and other rodeo stock.
Over his career, Jim sustained two broken arms, had his collarbone broken three times, broke both his hand and pelvis, and had innumerable concussions and broken ribs. He said back then that not much was known about concussions. He said when you got knocked out, they just dragged you out and splashed water on your face. He had an incredibly high tolerance for pain, and he often competed with injuries that would have sidelined almost any other man.
This Jim Shoulders History Mug is part of our Rodeo series which includes many unique rodeo stars. Activities involved in the practice of herding cattle were the basis of what became modern day rodeos. Nowadays cowboys and cowgirls compete in steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, team roping, tie-down roping, bull riding and barrel racing.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
