Description
Born John Paul in Scotland, he went to sea at 13 and rose to the rank of captain in the British Merchant Navy. In 1775 he moved to the American colonies where he became a captain in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and added Jones to his name. The British considered Jones a pirate but he is regarded as the “Father of the American Navy” in the United States. John Paul Jones famous words “I have not yet begun to fight” were in response to a demand to surrender during the 1779 Battle of Flamborough Head, a battle in which he was the victor. After the war, Jones became a rear admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy. In 1792 he was appointed U.S. Consul but died suddenly, in his bed, while in Paris, France.
The Revolutionary War was fought from 1775 to 1783. It began as a revolt of the colonies against what they believed was unfair taxation. While the war started as a conflict between Great Britain and the thirteen American colonies, it soon became a global conflict. France actively sided with the colonies, and the French naval fleet was instrumental in defeating the British at Yorktown. Holland supplied the colonies with weapons, while Spain supplied funding and diverted British forces by fighting on a second front and winning back Spanish forts in Florida that they lost during the Seven Years’ War. No independent country sided with Great Britain, but Britain employed German mercenaries, known as Hessians.
This John Paul Jones history mug is part of our Revolutionary War series which includes many of the notable figures who played major roles during this conflict.
