Thomas Robert Malthus, born in Surrey, England, was an English scholar, cleric, and economist in the field of political economy and demography. He was a published author best known for his observations on population growth. Thomas Robert Malthus argued that there were two means of check to hold the population within resource limits. One he called preventive checks, which cut the birth rate, and the other, positive ones which increase the death rate. Positive checks include hunger, disease, and war, while preventive checks include birth control, postponement of marriage, and celibacy. His predictions regarding population growth and society’s ability to support that growth were made in pre-industrial revolution times when the population was 10,000 times lower than it is today.

An Essay on the Principle of Population
Thomas Robert Malthus observed that increases in a nation’s food production led to population growth. As early as 1798, he foresaw that humans have a propensity to utilize abundance for population growth rather than maintaining a high standard of living. Malthus laid the theoretical foundation, both scientifically and ideologically that the power of population is indefinitely greater than the power of the earth to produce subsistence for man. At the time of his writing the earth had a population of 800,000, today the earth’s population is 8,000,000,000 and growing. The signs he predicted regarding famine, political, and social unrest are everywhere as a result of the Industrial Revolution and man’s plundering of the earth’s natural resources.
