Description
Priscilla Mullins was 18 when she came with her father William and step-mother Alice Mullins and her brother Joseph, age fourteen. They left behind her brother and sister in England. William, Alice, and Joseph all died during the winter of 1620-1621. Priscilla married John Alden, in 1621, and they had ten children (possibly an eleventh who died in infancy); Elizabeth, John, Joseph, Sarah, Jonathan, Ruth, Rebecca, Mary, Priscilla, and David. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a direct descendant, wrote the 1858 poem The Courtship of Miles Standish about Captain Miles Standish’s love for Priscilla.
The Mayflower
The Mayflower left England in September 1620 with 102 men, women and children bound for Virginia. After 65 days they arrived far north of their preferred destination. They created a government on arrival forming the Mayflower Compact, which stated the colonists would create “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices…,” follow their Christian faith, work together for the common good, and be loyal subjects to King James.
This Priscilla Mullins history mug is part of our Mayflower history series which includes many of the notable figures who played major roles during this conflict.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
