Robert Parrott graduated third in his class from West Point. In 1824 he was assigned as a second lieutenant in the artillery. He retired from the service in 1836 to become superintendent of the West Point Iron and Cannon Foundry in Cold Spring, N.Y. In 1860 Robert produced an innovative rifled cannon known as the Parrott rifle gun. It was made in several sizes, the largest weighed 26,000 pounds and fired a 300-pound projectile. Parrotts were used extensively by both the Confederate and Union armies. They were made using a combination of cast iron and wrought iron. Cast iron was brittle but very accurate. The method of applying a wrought iron reinforcing band made this cannon unique. It could fire a 100-pound projectile as far as four miles.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
