Description
Edgar Poe was orphaned at the age of two and raised by the Allan family, from whom he took the name, Allan. He attended the University of Virginia for a year and then joined the Army for two years before entering West Point. Poe purposely got himself court-martialed in order to leave and pursue life as a writer. He is best known for his poetry and short stories, and he is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and tales of mystery and the macabre. Edgar Allan Poe is widely considered the originator of the detective fiction genre and contributed to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to attempt to earn a living through writing alone, leading to a financially difficult life and career.
“Depend upon it, after all, Thomas, Literature is the most noble of professions. In fact, it is about the only one fit for a man. ‟For my own part, there is no seducing me from the path.” Quote from a letter by Edgar Allan Poe to Frederick W. Thomas (February 14, 1849).
