Degory Priest came alone on the Mayflower, planning to bring his wife and children later after the colony was better established. His death the first winter put an end to those plans. His wife Sarah remarried to Godbert Godbertson in Leiden, and they had a son Samuel. Godbert, Sarah, their son Samuel and Degory’s children, Mary and Sarah Priest all came to Plymouth in 1623 on the ship Anne.
The Mayflower left England in September 1620 with 102 men, women and children bound for Virginia. After 65 days they arrived far north of their preferred destination. They created a government on arrival forming the Mayflower Compact, which stated the colonists would create “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices…,” follow their Christian faith, work together for the common good, and be loyal subjects to King James.
This Degory Priest history mug is part of our Mayflower history series which includes many of the notable figures who played major roles during this conflict.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
