Description
Elbridge Gerry was a signatory on both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. He served in the Continental Congress from 1776 to1780 and in the Confederation Congress from 1783 to 1785. He attended the Constitutional Convention but refused to sign the Constitution because it did not include a Bill of Rights. He was elected to the inaugural House in 1789 and served two terms. In 1810, he was elected governor of Massachusetts but was criticized for redistricting the state to give advantage to his political party. This is the source of the term gerrymandering, a combination of his last name and the shape of a mythological salamander. Gerry was Vice President from 1812 to his death in 1814.

The Continental Congress met between 1774-1785. This was followed by the Confederation Congress, under the Articles of Confederation which existed between 1785-1789. The First United States Congress, also known as the First Federal Congress, consisted of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives, which met between, March 4, 1789 and March 4, 1791.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
