Description
Israel Richardson was born in Fairfax, Vermont. He was an Army officer in the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars. He was nicknamed “Fighting Dick” for his prowess on the battlefield. He led forces in the Peninsula Campaign and was promoted to major general on July 4, 1862. At Antietam, his division played a key role by attacking in the center of the Sunken Road in support of General William French. Richardson gained control of the high ground, and his men enfiladed the defenders in the road, giving it the name of ‟Bloody Lane.” Richardson moved beyond the road and directed artillery but was struck by a shell fragment and carried to the rear. His wound was not considered life-threatening, but infection set in and he died two months later.
This Israel Richardson mug is part of our Antietam, Vermont and Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
