George J. Stannard worked as a farmer, teacher and foundry operator. He was a lieutenant colonel at the First Battle of Bull Run and rose to colonel of the 9th Vermont Infantry. Forced to surrender at Harpers Ferry, he was part of a prisoner exchange and returned to Vermont where he was appointed brigadier general of the 2nd Vermont Brigade. At Gettysburg, his brigade was a principle defender of Pickett’s Charge. By swinging two regiments on flanking maneuvers, he defeated Confederate Generals Kemper and Wilcox’s assaults. Wounded in the leg, Stannard stayed on the field until the end of the battle. He was wounded again at Cold Harbor and again at Fort Harrison, which required the amputation of his arm.
At the Gettysburg battle, Major General Abner Doubleday was the corps commander of George Stannard’s 2nd Vermont Brigade. After Pickett’s charge on July 3, 1863, Doubleday wrote the following regarding the actions of Stannard’s 2nd Vermont Brigade:
“I can only say that they performed perhaps the most brilliant feat during the war. For they broke the desperate charge of Pickett, saved the day and with it, the whole North from invasion and devastation.”
This George J. Stannard mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
