Edgar Poe was orphaned at the age of two and raised by the Allan family, from whom he took the name, Allan. He attended the University of Virginia for a year and then joined the Army for two years before entering West Point. Poe purposely got himself court-martialed in order to leave and pursue life as a writer. He is best known for his poetry and short stories, and he is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism and tales of mystery and the macabre.
