Description
As a child, William Mahone narrowly escaped being massacred by the Nat Turner slave rebellion in 1831. He attended V.M.I. as a cadet under professor Thomas Jackson. With his degree in civil engineering, laid out street plans and railroad routes. As chief engineer for a railroad, he built log foundations under swamps that are still intact today. He is considered the hero of the Battle of the Crater. During the Siege of Petersburg, he rallied Confederate forces to fill the breach in their lines and repelled the Union assault. After the war, he returned to building railroads helping to create the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad. In 1881 he won a seat in the Senate as an independent, where he caucused with Republicans, conservative Democrats and African Americans.
This William Mahone mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
