Description
Jahaziel Sherman was an innovator in the early years of steamboat design and construction. He built many of the first steamboats and later canal boats that sailed on Lake Champlain. He established a shipyard on the banks of the Otter Creek in Vergennes, served in the Vermont House of Representatives, and excelled as a landowner and businessman.
The Phoenix was built in Vergennes, Vermont in 1815 under the direction of Jahaziel Sherman. It was the second steamer to sail on Lake Champlain, operating until 1819 when she caught fire and burned to the waterline. The wreckage is the oldest known example of a sidewheel steamer and is a Vermont State Historic Site and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
