Description
Annie Easley was an African-American Computer Scientist, Mathematician, and Rocket Scientist. In her 34 year career, she helped develop the computer code that analyzed alternative power technologies and was a leading member of the team that developed software for the Centaur rocket stage which laid the groundwork for future space shuttle launches and weather satellites. Her work contributed to the flight to Saturn of the Cassini probe. She worked in fields such as solar, wind and energy projects and developed systems to solve energy problems such as the life use of storage batteries.
Human Computers
The term “computer” originated in 1613 and meant “one who computes” indicating someone who performs complex mathematical calculations. The early computers focused on astronomy and navigation. In 1940, NASA began hiring female African-American’s as mathematicians. These women went on to become the first professional computer programmers.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
