Description
John Goodman was possibly from Northampton. Little is know of when he was born or died. He was listed on the 1623 Division of Land where he received an acre. In January 1621, John Goodman and Peter Brown were cutting thatch for house roofing and went for a short walk when they spotted a deer and gave chase. They found themselves lost and spent the night in the rain and snow, after hearing what they thought was a lion. Goodman suffered frostbite but was finally able to find his way back to the Colony.
The Mayflower
The Mayflower left England in September 1620 with 102 men, women and children bound for Virginia. After 65 days they arrived far north of their preferred destination. They created a government on arrival forming the Mayflower Compact, which stated the colonists would create “laws, ordinances, acts, constitutions, and offices…,” follow their Christian faith, work together for the common good, and be loyal subjects to King James.
This John Goodman history mug is part of our Mayflower history series which includes many of the notable figures who played major roles during this conflict.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
