Description
William N. Meserve was born in Barrington, N.H. and in 1862 enlisted in Company K, 35th Infantry. He was wounded twice at Antietam and rose to the rank of Major by the end of the war. He is best remembered for the extensive diary he kept during the war. After the war, he became a dentist and in 1870 received religious inspiration and became an evangelist minister. His son, Frederick, while estranged from his father, was inspired to work with his father and publish his father’s diary. In the process, Frederick created what became the most extensive collection of Civil War photographs, most of which were focused on Abraham Lincoln. In 2012, the entire collection was acquired by Yale University.
This William N. Meserve mug is part of our Civil War Series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor, and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
