Description

Scott Nearing was an American radical, anti-capitalist professor, pacifist, writer, political activist, and advocate of simple living.  He was the son of a wealthy stockbroker.  Nearing became a college professor and a vocal advocate against social injustice.  He was a founding member of the People’s Council of America for Democracy and Peace.  His political views leaned first toward Socialism then Communism.  Those views are reflected in his extensive writings and speaking engagements. After running for political office several times he left city life for a simple life in the country.  Moving in 1934 to Vermont, then in 1954 to Maine.  Their Maine property became the Good Life Center where thousands visited each year to learn self-sufficiency from the Nearings.

Leading the Good Life

In 1954, Scott & Helen Nearing wrote Living the Good Life: How to Live Sanely and Simply in a Troubled World. The book was self-published and recounted their experiment of homesteading in Vermont from 1934 to 1954.  Vegetarianism was central to the Nearing’s Good Life ethic and making a subsistence income by working the land. The book became the bible of the back to the land movement of the 1970s.  Many who tried to emulate the Nearing’s experience failed, even the Nearing’s success was due in part to a substantial inheritance.
