Description
Oliver Howard received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks. He was wounded twice in his right arm, which later had to be amputated. Howard recovered quickly enough to rejoin the Army in time for the Battle of Antietam, where he rose to division command in the 11th Corps. He suffered setbacks at the Battle of Chancellorsville, where he failed to heed warnings that his flank was exposed and was routed by Stonewall Jackson. At Gettysburg, Howard quarreled with General Winfield Hancock over who was in command. Howard had the higher rank, but Hancock had written orders from Meade putting Hancock in charge of the defenses on Cemetery Hill. After the war, Oliver became commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau.
This Oliver Howard mug is part of our Medal of Honor series and our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
