Description
George Sykes served in the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars. In the Civil War, he was corps commander during the Peninsula Campaign, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. At Antietam, he followed a literal interpretation of orders and missed making significant contributions. One of his subordinates requested they advance in the face of a thin and wavering gray line, but Sykes recalled his men to a defensive position. At Gettysburg, his corps supported the Union left flank and the fabled defense of Little Round Top. George Sykes was given the nickname of ‟Slow Trot” for his lack of aggressiveness. After the Battle of Mine Run, he was removed as corps commander and sent to Kansas.
This George Sykes mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
