Description

Charles Dawes was a banker, politician and WWI military general before his election as the 30th vice president.  He was a co-recipient of the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the Dawes Plan for war reparations.  When Dawes finished his term as vice president, he served as ambassador to the United Kingdom.  As the Great Depression ravaged the country, Herbert Hoover appealed to Dawes to leave the diplomatic office and head the newly created Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Charles Dawes headed the R.F.C. but resigned after a few months to rescue the City National Bank and Trust Company of Chicago, on which he was a board member.  Political opponents alleged Dawes had given his bank preferential treatment, and this accusation ended his career in public service.

This U.S. Vice President Charles Dawes History Mug is part of our U.S. Vice Presidents Series which includes all of the US Vice Presidents.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
