Warren Gamaliel Harding was the first incumbent US senator and the first newspaper publisher to be elected president. During his term, he moved away from progressivism. In spite of this, he signed the first child welfare program and supported an eight hour work day. Unemployment dropped by 50 percent during his term in office. Warren G. Harding was a keen poker player, he once lost an entire set of White House china in a single hand. Corruption marred his term, in particular, the Teapot Dome Scandal. Harding is considered a modern politician, having embraced technology and been sensitive to the conditions of minorities, women and labor. Harding died suddenly while in office.

This changed with the 17th Amendment, which mandated senators be elected by popular vote. Warren Harding was a member of the U.S. Senate prior to his election as president. Many of the men who become president and vice president first served in Congress as members of the House of Representatives or in the U.S. Senate. A number of these individuals first served in their state government as governor, state senator or in their state House of Representatives.

He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.
