Description
Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and part of the Continental Congress during the Revolution. He was the first U.S. minister to France and served as secretary of state under George Washington. He was elected vice president in 1797, serving under John Adams, and in 1801 he was elected president. Thomas Jefferson oversaw the purchase of the Louisiana Territory in 1803 and sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new west. In 1807, he signed a law banning the importation of slaves. Jefferson spoke five languages and was an inventor, who had a deep interest in architecture, science, religion and philosophy. Jefferson expressed opposition to slavery but owned hundreds and only freed a few.
The secretary of state was created as part of the president’s cabinet beginning with the administration of George Washington. Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisers, in the form of the attorney general, secretary of the treasury, secretary of state, and secretary of war. Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers. Members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. The secretary of state is regarded as the most senior position in the Cabinet and is fourth in the line of succession to the president.
