U.S. President James Earl Carter was a peanut farmer who served in the Navy and was governor of Georgia. He became president after years of scandal in the Republican-held White House. Jimmy Carter created the Department of Energy and the Department of Education, and he pursued the Camp David Accords and the Panama Canal Treaties. He took office at a time of international stagnation and inflation, which persisted throughout his term. His tenure was marked by the 1979 energy crisis, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the eruption of Mount St. Helens. He lost his 1980 bid for re-election to Ronald Reagan. After leaving office Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and founded the Carter Center to advance human rights.
There are three separate branches of government in the United States; the legislative, executive, and judicial. The president is the head of the executive branch, the elected head of state, and the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces. The executive branch is responsible for executing and enforcing federal law and appointing heads of all executive agencies and federal commissions. The president is responsible for promoting diplomacy with other nations, issuing executive orders, and signing pardons and international treaties. When legislation is passed in Congress, the president has the power to sign or veto bills. The Constitution states that the president must be a natural-born citizen of the U.S., at least 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. Elections are held every four years and the president is limited to two, four-year terms.
