Description

As Secretary of War, Henry Knox oversaw the creation of the U.S. Navy, the building of coastal fortifications and stockpiling weapons in armories.  Knox stated his views on Native Americans saying  “The Indians, being the prior occupants, possess the right to the soil.  It cannot be taken from them except by their consent, or by rights of conquest in case of a just war.  To dispossess them on any other principle would be a great violation of the fundamental laws of nature.”   However, during his tenure, the military pursued the Indian wars and confiscated native lands.   Knox retired to Thomaston, Maine where he made a living off real estate, cattle farming and brick making.

The first two Secretaries of War were appointed between 1781 and 1789 to serve the Congress of the Confederation. The position became part of the President’s Cabinet starting with the administration of George Washington.  Washington created four cabinet positions to provide him with a source of key advisors, in the form of Attorney General, Secretary of the Treasury, Secretary of State and Secretary of War.  Current presidential cabinets are made up of sixteen officers.  Cabinet members are chosen by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

This Henry Knox History Mug is part of our Secretary of War series which includes the many unique individuals who served as U.S. Secretary of War.
