Description

Patrick Leahy was born in 1940 and appointed as State’s Attorney of Chittenden County in 1966.  He was elected in 1974 to the U.S. Senate and is the most senior member of the Senate.  He is Vermont’s longest-serving senator, and the first Democrat ever elected to the U.S. Senate from Vermont, which had been a staunchly Republican state.  After his 1981 proposal to increase enforcement funding of the Energy Dept. was defeated, Patrick Leahy called Reagan’s enforcement cuts a “de factor amnesty” for violations.  In 2013, Leahy sponsored the most bipartisan bills of any senator.  He voted in favor of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, actively fought to ban the use of anti-personal landmines, supported the NAACP and affirmative action.  In 2021, he was president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate and presided over the impeachment trial of Trump.

The United States Senate and House of Representatives comprise the legislative branch of the U.S. government.  Each state has two senators regardless of the state’s population.  U.S. senators serve staggered terms of six years.  Prior to 1913, senators were appointed by their state legislatures.  This changed with the 17th Amendment, which mandated senators be elected by popular vote.  The Senate has the power to ratify treaties and to confirm cabinet secretaries, federal judges, Supreme Court justices, and other federal executive officials.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
