Description
Thomas Hendricks was a lifelong Democrat who supported Lincoln during the Civil War. His political career included holding offices as the governor of Indiana, U.S. senator and U.S. representative from Indiana. He served as vice president during the last eight months of his life, from his inauguration on March 4 until his death on November 25, 1885. After his death the vice presidency remained vacant until Levi P. Morton assumed office in 1889. Thomas Hendricks is the only vice president who did not serve as president whose image appears on U.S. paper currency. His portrait appears on the $10 “tombstone” silver certificate of 1886. He opposed the issuance of greenback paper currency, which was not backed by gold or silver, and issued between 1861 and 1865.
This U.S. Vice President Thomas Hendricks History Mug is part of our U.S. Vice Presidents Series which includes all of the US Vice Presidents.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
