Description
U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected president a record four times. He was a central figure in world events, leading the U.S. during a time of worldwide economic depression and World War II. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal domestic policies defined American Liberalism. In his first 100 days in office, he pushed through legislation and issued executive orders that created programs for unemployment, economic growth, and reform of Wall Street and banking. In 1937, conservatives formed a coalition that prevented FDR from packing the Supreme Court and blocked much of his major liberal legislation. FDR contracted polio as a young man and did not walk again without aid, though the public never saw him in a wheelchair. He died early in his fourth term.
There are three separate branches of government in the United States; the legislative, executive, and judicial. The president is the head of the executive branch, the elected head of state, and the commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces. The executive branch is responsible for executing and enforcing federal law and appointing heads of all executive agencies and federal commissions. The president is responsible for promoting diplomacy with other nations, issuing executive orders, and signing pardons and international treaties. When legislation is passed in Congress, the president has the power to sign or veto bills. The Constitution states that the president must be a natural-born citizen of the U.S., at least 35 years old, and have lived in the U.S. for at least 14 years. Elections are held every four years and the president is limited to two, four-year terms.
