Description
Harry S. Truman came from a farm family in Missouri and served in combat in World War I. He was the third vice president to serve under F.D.R. and became president when Roosevelt died in 1945. Truman first came to national prominence as head of the Truman Committee, exposing waste, fraud and corruption in wartime contracts. He concluded World War II, making the decision to drop atomic bombs on Japan. After the war, Harry S. Truman assisted in founding the United Nations and passed the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. The Truman Doctrine was issued to contain Communism, and he oversaw the beginning of the Cold War with the Soviet Union. In 1950, he sent troops to Korea when communist North Korea invaded democratic South Korea.
This U.S. Vice President Harry S. Truman History Mug is part of our U.S. Vice Presidents Series which includes all of the US Vice Presidents.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia-tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
