Description
Lyndon B. Johnson was a Texas Democrat who served in both houses of Congress and was Senate majority leader. As vice president, he ascended to the presidency upon John F. Kennedy᾽s assassination. Johnson won a full term as president, defeating Barry Goldwater in 1964. His “Great Societyˮ legislation upheld laws on civil rights, Medicaid, Medicare, public broadcasting and the environment. Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Povertyˮ helped millions rise above the poverty line. He was known for his domineering personality, which he used to coerce politicians to advance legislation. Johnson escalated the Vietnam conflict when Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, giving him unlimited power to make war. His presidency marked the peak of liberalism after the New Deal era.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.
