Description

Before the war, James Childs worked as an engineer and wholesale dry goods merchant.  In the Civil War, he rose to the rank of colonel in the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry.  Childs served under McClellan in the Peninsula Campaign and during Antietam was attached to Averell’s brigade.  The brigade was assigned to the left of the Union line, which was taking destructive fire.  Childs encouraged his men and directed their movements without concern for his own well-being.  After he returned to headquarters, and while still seated on his horse, he was struck by a cannonball, which passed completely through his body.  He asked that a message be passed on to his young son: “Tell Howe to be a good boy, and a good man, and true to his country.”

This James Childs mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
