Description
Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a British writer and physician. After receiving his medical degree, his two attempts to set up an independent practice proved to be unsuccessful. Doyle was a published author by the time he was age 27. He modeled his most famous character, Sherlock Holmes, on his former university teacher, Joseph Bell. Doyle was active in sports, as an amateur boxer, footballer, and first-class cricketer. He was interested in mystical subjects and the idea of paranormal phenomena.
Arthur Conan Doyle was ambivalent towards Holmes his most famous creation. In 1891, he wrote to his mother saying: “I think of slaying Holmes, … and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things.” His mother replied, “You won’t! … You mustn’t.” Doyle attempted to end his Sherlock Homes stories by raising prices to his publishers at a level that discouraged them. However to his surprise, they were willing to pay the higher prices, and as a result, Doyle became one of the highest-paid authors of his time.
