Description
William Lloyd Garrison was a social reformer, abolitionist, journalist and suffragist. During his long career as an editor of newspapers, he printed reports on the barbarities of slavery. Jailed in Maryland for his articles, he was released when Arthur Tappan, a noted anti-slavery philanthropist, paid his fine. In 1831 he founded the anti-slavery newspaper, The Liberator. Months after the paper started publication the Nat Turner rebellion took place and the North Carolina legislature offered a $5,000 reward to have Garrison captured and brought to N.C. for trial on the grounds of distributing incendiary material. Garrison found support for his anti-slavery message with women, which led him to advocate for women’s suffrage.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
