Description
Henry David Thoreau was an American author, naturalist, poet, and philosopher. He is best known for his book Walden or Life in the Woods which was a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. The book was the result of his year-long stay in a cabin on Walden Pond. Thoreau’s writings on natural history foretold today’s environmentalism movement. He was a lifelong abolitionist in the years before the Civil War. His philosophy of civil disobedience influenced later figures such as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King Jr.
Henry David Thoreau is sometimes referred to as an anarchist. In his book Civil Disobedience he wrote “That government is best which governs least. … I believe that government is best which governs not at all, and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have…..but, to speak practically and as a citizen, unlike those who call themselves no-government men, I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government.”
