When Lee invaded Maryland he divided his forces sending Jackson and Ambrose Powell Hill᾽s Light Division to capture the armory at Harpers Ferry. The Union garrison was quickly defeated and Hill was left to attend to the surrender when Lee encountered the Army of the Potomac near Sharpsburg. Lee was badly outnumbered but McClellan held off attacking until the next day, giving time for Jackson and Longstreet᾽s corps to arrive. The battle on September 17 was brutal and the Union forces were almost able to break through, when Hill᾽s division arrived at 3:30 pm, after making a forced march from Harpers Ferry. Ambrose Powell Hill arrived in time to turn the tide of the battle on the Confederate right flank.
This Ambrose Powell Hill mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
