Description
John Bell Hood was a great commander known for his courage and aggressiveness. At the Battle of Antietam, Hood᾽s division came to the aid of Jackson᾽s Corps and turned back a brutal assault by Union forces in the West Woods. That night when Lee asked Hood where his division was he responded, ‟They are lying on the field where you sent them. My division is almost wiped out.” Hood᾽s 2000 man division had nearly 1000 casualties. Stonewall Jackson was so impressed with Hood᾽s performance he recommended him for promotion to major general. Hood had his left arm crippled at Gettysburg and was shot in the leg at Chickamauga, which necessitated its amputation. Even with these injuries, he commanded forces until the end of the war.
This John Bell Hood mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
