Description
James Longstreet received the nickname ‟Old War Horse” when Lee greeted him after the Battle of Antietam. Longstreet was located at the center position of the Confederate forces. He mounted a defensive stand during which his army repelled a Union force twice its size. Federal forces, under Israel Richardson, threatened to divide the Confederate Army in half, when they overran the ‟Bloody Lane.” Longstreet inspired his men to hold their fragmented firing line, even ordering his staff officers to man an artillery battery, and stalled the Union assault. Longstreet was noted for his wisdom in choosing strong defensive positions. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general for his actions at the Battle of Antietam.
