Description
John B. Gordon was one of the most successful generals in the Confederate Army. He was known for his aggressive actions that often led to victories and to his being wounded multiple times. At the Battle of Antietam, he held the Sunken Road and was shot in the calf, upper leg, left arm and shoulder but continued to lead his men until a fifth ball hit him in the face. Gordon recovered from these wounds, returned to service and was wounded several more times. He led the last major attack on Union forces in Petersburg and was with Lee when the Army of Northern Virginia surrendered at Appomattox. After the war, Gordon was elected governor of Georgia and to a seat in the U.S. Senate. He believed in white supremacy and in 1903 published a book titled Reminiscences of the Civil War.
This John B. Gordon mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
