Description
Born in Lovell, Vermont, John Caldwell was a teacher before the war. In the Peninsula Campaign he assumed command of the 1st Brigade of the 11th Corps when General Oliver Howard was wounded. During Antietam, he led his division when its commander, Israel Richardson, was wounded. Caldwell was criticized for mishandling his brigade in the assault on the sunken road or ‟Bloody Lane” and was wounded during the battle. He was wounded twice at Fredericksburg, while preparing to assault Marye’s Heights. At Gettysburg, serving under Winfield Hancock, his division reinforced the 111th Corps in the Wheatfield and conducted the largest Union assault of the three-day battle. Caldwell was an honor guard for Lincoln’s funeral train.
This John Caldwell mug is part of our US Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States. Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.
The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
