Description
John Nicolay was born in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in 1839. He first met Lincoln when he was editor of the Pike County Press in Illinois. Lincoln’s first official act as president was to appoint Nicolay as his private secretary, and he served in that capacity until Lincoln’s death in 1865. In the years after the war Nicolay became U.S. Consul to Paris, then editor of the Chicago Republican. From 1872 -1887 he was marshal of the U.S. Supreme Court. John was a founding member of the Literary Society of Washington. In collaboration with John Hay he wrote the official biography of Lincoln. It was the definitive biography of the time. In addition Nicolay and Hay wrote the 12-volume work called the Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
