Description

John Sedgwick served in the Seminole, Mexican-American, Utah and Indian Wars.  At Antietam his division was sent as part of a mass assault against Stonewall Jackson, who attacked him from three sides, decimating his division and causing the loss of nearly half his men.  Sedgwick was shot three times, in the wrist, leg, and shoulder.  He returned to service in time to take part in the Battle of Chancellorsville.  Sedgwick’s corps arrived late at Gettysburg and saw only limited action. Sedgwick was killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.  His death made him the highest-ranking United States soldier killed during the war.  He is remembered for his last words before being shot: “They could not hit an elephant at this distance.”

This John Sedgwick mug is part of our Civil War series profiling participants in the War Between the States.  Thousands of Confederate and Union soldiers fought in battles such as Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.  We honor their sacrifices by telling their stories.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history.  The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton.  He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone.  The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
