Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister and activist who became a leader of the civil rights movement. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, King stressed nonviolence and civil disobedience as a means to end racial discrimination. In 1964 Martin Luther King, Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. King expanded his focus to include opposition towards poverty and the war in Vietnam. In 1968 he was assassinated by James Earl Ray. His death was followed by riots across the country. In 1983, President Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honor King.

The biographical History Mugs were created to teach and inspire individuals to learn about our diverse and interesting history. The biographies were researched and written by history enthusiast, Robert Compton. He colorized most of the historic photos and images used on the mugs, which were originally black and white or sepia tone. The images and biographies are imprinted on mugs at his studio in rural Vermont.
